Often referred to as “the front page of the internet,” Google’s favorite website has tons of online communities (known as “subreddits”) that people are using to make money online in various ways. A truly magical place for many, on Reddit you can promote yourself or your brand, find remote jobs, microtasks, and a huge pile of opportunities you can seize – but how can you make it profitable?

It’s the kind of website where you can even get a loan from strangers, share your stories and personal experiences, use it to promote almost anything that you can think of, and mostly interact with other people. Unlike social media platforms and other forums, Reddit is also the king of SEO, especially now that they agreed (in a $60 million deal) that Google can use its human posts to train its AI model, known as Gemini.

Although I’ve been using Reddit for over 12 years now, I never used it to make money, land a job, or even promote my content. I mostly love its subreddits, and I like reading stories and personal experiences from other people, many of which are handy enough to help you avoid making any mistakes that others did. It’s a huge place, one that you can easily get lost, but one that can provide all that you ever wanted, as long as you’re using it the right way.

Unlike me though, I found some people who found a few ways to make Reddit profitable, and they do that with style. I spoke with a few of them, and they were kind enough to share their stories with me and a few ways that anyone can use it with ease to make money, from a few bucks to thousands of dollars.

1. Sending Redditors to third-party websites

Although this may sound like the most obvious way to make money and promote your website, products, or services, it’s more than that. On Reddit, most subreddits do not let Redditors share links from their websites to promote their content – not in most of them, at least – so content creators and marketers have found alternatives and smarter ways.

Instead of sharing a link, they focus on providing high-quality and unique answers to common problems and questions Redditors ask, and along with their own websites, they include other links too.

Let’s say for example that you own a food blog and you want to promote it through Reddit. You start by joining the most popular subreddits with food lovers, and someone asks how to make a specific recipe, or how to buy a specific kitchen equipment. Instead of saying, “Hey, here’s a link to my article”, you can simply say, “I reviewed this product on my blog a couple of months ago…” or “I found a way to make this recipe even tastier and even wrote about it on my blog…”, and you continue by providing all the necessary information.

Subredditors tend to be curious, so they’ll visit your profile, click on your blog’s link, and search for the recipe or the product.

But that’s not enough, as it still feels like self-promotion, meaning that there’s a high possibility of getting blocked from the community. Instead, after noting that you own a blog in this niche, you provide (with fewer steps and less information than your blog post) how to make the recipe tastier or your thoughts and experience with the product. Now, it’s a good answer.

Apart from that, there are hundreds of communities that do accept self-promotion links from blogs, YouTube channels, podcasts, and so much more, and you can join in all of them. Whatever you do though, it’s important to read the terms of each subreddit, as each and every one has their own policies when it comes to posting. Whatever doesn’t scream “I want more clicks and make more money” will be good enough. You shouldn’t forget that there are countless users there trying to do the same thing as you, so being unique and providing high-quality content is obsolete.

2. Searching for Micro Jobs in r/SlaveLabour

If you want to quickly make money, yet work for less than you’d usually do, then r/SlaveLabour is a great subreddit. Basically, it’s a place where you can find casual online work, but most of the jobs over there are well below the market rate – making it difficult to earn lots of money, yet enough to earn a few bucks. It’s not focused on specific skills either, you can simply use your expertise to land a job, including if you’re a writer, marketer, web developer, graphic designer, musician, or whatever.

Although the name may quickly drive you away, there’s a good reason why they’ve added it as is, and that’s because of all the scammers that use Reddit to earn. Here’s what the subreddit’s description says about it, just to take a taste:

Slavelabour is a place to find casual online work and get jobs done well below market rate. However, the name is not literal and is a tongue in cheek reference to how cheap tasks and offers are here. We do have an extensive list of rules that need to be followed in order to participate. The reason for this is that with a subreddit this size scammers are common place. We’re a big target. Not just for scammers but also for Reddit admin, so we don’t allow anything prohibited by Reddit.

r/SlaveLabour has tons of tasks and offers that are posted every day, and although there’s a big competition and some Redditors working for pennies, that doesn’t mean that a professional can’t make more money and close better deals. It’s all about your skills and what you can create, but those tasks and offers are mostly 100% remote, so if you’re looking for a full-time or part-time job, that’s not for you.

3. Find job opportunities for cryptocurrencies in r/Jobs4Bitcoin

Looking to make as much money in cryptocurrencies as you can, but don’t have the budget to invest? That’s okay, because there are many people who are currently hiring various talents to work for them and get paid in cryptocurrencies. It’s pretty simple and straightforward too, you can either find work or find workers, and all payments are being done in Bitcoin or other cryptocurrencies, depending on each agreement.

The r/Jobs4Bitcoin subreddit comes with its own rules and policies, including that all posts must be flaired with either [For Hire] or [Hiring], you can only post once every 48 hours, and if you want to get hired, you should always make sure that you’ve added your portfolio. Affiliate and referral programs are not allowed either, and bounty-type posts exceeding $75 require a middleman.

There are a few other rules that you’ll need to follow, especially if you’re a new user, but you can read all about them in their ‘About’ section.

4. Use r/Freelance and r/WorkOnline to get a job

Both r/Freelance and r/WorkOnline are great subreddits that you can use to get a job as a freelancer who works remotely. It doesn’t really matter what are your skills or your field, there are offers for almost anything that you can possibly think of, including writers, graphic designers, SEO experts, data analysts, and so much more. Unlike other subreddits though, those two communities are all about freelancers sharing their experiences or asking questions.

Finding a job offer in these two subreddits is not the easiest way, as they tend to be used by people who are either interested in starting a freelance career or want to know more about a specific company, application, or platform that promises paychecks. With that in mind, you can ask all of your questions there, search for what people are saying about a specific company, or even learn how to make money online in various ways.

What I like about both of these communities is that people will share some pretty difficult situations they’ve been in, such as a client asking a freelancer to either choose them or another similar company that he’s already managing, just because they’re different, yet very similar.

People not knowing if their business partner will accept a full-time job from one of their clients, making the other freelancer (and partner) worry that he’s gonna lose his business. There are many scary stories over there, and if you really want to work as a freelancer, knowing how to handle the most difficult situations is crucial.

Being a freelancer is never easy, and most of us constantly worry about the near future, getting stressed because clients treat us like… well, you get the point, and having no help whatsoever, communities r/Freelance and r/WorkOnline are a great way to share our problems and get help from other people who often experience the same situations as us.

5. Build your own affiliate-monetized subreddit

Although most people use already created subreddits to promote themselves or their work, get new clients, or ask to get hired from employees, there’s always another way: Create your own subreddit, promote it in various ways, build an audience, and have your own rules and policies. Having your community of people following you is a great way to make sure that, whatever happens, you’re the one who handles everything.

As with any other social media platform, on Reddit, you can follow other users, and they can do the same. The more followers you have, the higher the chances to earn more money by monetizing your content with affiliate links.

You can start by joining as many communities as you can that are similar to your niche, and interacting with other people in the comment sections will help you gain more karma and followers, as long as you follow the rules and provide great replies. It may take a bit of time until you start seeing lots of people following you, but building an audience on Reddit is surely not impossible.

If you’re an expert in your field you always create and host your own AMAs (Ask Me Anything), which is a great way to gain new followers that are interested in your niche. Organizing and creating contests and giveaways is also another great way to build a community, but it really depends on your budget and the products that you’re giving away.

Having so many active communities and so many different rules and policies can be really overwhelming for new Redditors, but learning how to use the platform and promote your content, products, services, or your own brand in smart ways can help you earn more money and build a bigger audience.
